“Along with young
children, the Nazis usually killed their mothers and older sisters.
Girls and women who were strong and healthy and were not trying to
care for a child had the possibility of being placed in labor camps.
There they worked in factories or on farms, and did heavy outdoor
work. They were supervised by female guards and kapos, who could be
every bit as brutal as their male counterparts.
In some camps, females
wore sacklike dresses. In others, they wore the same striped
uniforms as males. Like males, they had their heads and bodies
shaved and deloused. Camp conditions for females were very similar
to what boys and men endured, but far fewer girls and women were
able to survive them.”
